Objectives

  • Our research focused on identifying an optimal place for planting landscape trees within limited space to enhance their energy conservation benefits.
  • We used computer simulations to study the effects of tree form (size and shape) and tree placement (distance and direction from a house) on energy consumption to determine the best place for tree planting within limited spaces.

The objectives of this research project are:

  • Quantify and characterize daily and seasonal patterns of tree shade cast by a single landscape tree;
  • Evaluate how shade provision influences residential cooling and heating energy consumption; and
  • Develop and examine alternative tree placement strategies for recently constructed homes across diverse climate regions of the United States
